Rest!

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

After revealing who he is, namely the Son of God and God the Son, Jesus makes a deal none of us should refuse: “Come to Me.” This is an invitation for those weary and burdened by life (burnt out) to come and find rest for their souls.
This “rest” however, is not a passive put-your-feet-up-and-sit-back-and-relax kind of rest but an active rest. In order to off-load life’s heavy burdens we must, surprisingly, take on another burden, albeit, an easier and lighter one. That burden is the “yoke” of Jesus.

Yokes were harness types of equipment that were placed upon the shoulders and necks of farm animals to guide them in plowing straight rows for crops. If you will, yokes were ancient steering wheels. So what Jesus is offering us is to steer us, “Into paths of righteousness for his name’s sake” (Psalm 23:6). But what is his yoke? His yoke is his teaching which we joyfully volunteer to obey.
So by a deliberate act of faith today, let’s shed those worldly burdens (I Peter 5:7) and ask Jesus to place his yoke upon us. If we do we will find a new spiritual and emotional energy we never imagined.
